Orchard pruning event with Tamar Community Trust

Date: Wednesday 6th of February 2019
Time: 10.30am - 4pm
Location: Hatches Farm, Calstock Rd, Gunnislake, Cornwall, PL18 9BX

Event Description

Come along to this orchard pruning event in Gunnislake, helping to improve habitats for bats and other wildlife in the area. The pruning will help maintain the health of older apple trees whilst encouraging growth of the newly planted trees in this traditional orchard which has been here since at least 1870. This partnership event is organised by Tamar Community Trust.

We will work with feet firmly on the ground to prune out some diseased and crowded branches on elderly, unpruned apple trees, to let more light and air into the framework of each tree. This will encourage greater health, longer life and better fruiting in the trees, but we will also leave intact old branches which are providing good habitat for the orchard’s valuable wildlife.

We will aim to:
• cover safe work techniques and hand tool use,
• understand different varieties of fruit trees and their uses
• understand methods of care and pruning suitable for each tree

All training and tools provided but if you have favourite secateurs, pruning saw, loppers and gloves, please bring them. Lunch and other refreshments provided. Wear sturdy footwear, gloves and dress warmly for the weather on the day (pruning is usually cold work!)
So that we have an idea of numbers, please let me know if you are coming along: see below for contact details. I will send more details of finding Hatches Farm when you have booked. I hope you can make it and look forward to seeing you.
